Sun exposure and skin
We love the sun, and it’s essential to life, but ... it also causes skin damage, including:
-
skin cancer
-
wrinkles (collagen & elastin dried out)
-
blotches and blemishes
-
older-looking skin: the sun radiates UVA and UVB rays which contain free radicals, and these cause skin cell damage.
Look at any fabric or furniture that has been exposed to the sun. See how the fabric has lost its original colour, and wood or plastic becomes cracked and warped? Solar rays are very strong.
Do you really want the sun to wreck your skin? How often we say, ‘I should have put sun block on’. Too late! Often my boyfriend comes home burned red like a crab, saying, ‘Oh, I thought the sun was not as strong, it’s cloudy/windy/springtime/I’ve been in the shade.’ Blah blah blah!
Sunburn not only makes you look like a shrivelled prawn, your skin feels tight and is very dehydrated - and sometimes painful.
Protect your skin from the sun
-
Use sun block daily if going outside
-
Apply it 20-30 minutes before you go out
-
Apply it to clean skin
-
Check how long your sun block lasts
-
Re-apply it if exercising or in the water
-
Avoid exposing your skin between 10 am and 3 pm
-
Wear a cap or hat, and cover up with ‘breathable’ clothes
So often, people apply sun block once they get to the beach. Sun block needs 20-30 minutes to be absorbed and give protection. Please keep it in your mind.
In winter, and on rainy or cloudy days we still need UV protection. 50% of UVA & UVB can still penetrate through cloudy, overcast conditions. Always protect your skin, and your health!
