Recipes for masks and scrubs
Have you tried home-made skin treatments? I’ve done it many times. Sometimes it works well, but not always. Like when I used a fresh carrot mask before going out, and then turned orange. My mum was laughing the next day (why didn’t she tell me?). Or when I did a fresh yeast hair mask with egg, and the egg cooked itself in my hair & the yeast smelled awful. It was supposed to be egg yolk only, not the whole egg.
Here are some good mixtures that won’t do crazy things.
Note: These scrubs can be applied to wet or dry skin. You may want to wet your hands again if your skin starts to feel tight.
Recipes for masks and scrubs
Skin-smoother
Skin type: All Use: Once a week
Put 2 teaspoons of baking soda into a bowl and carefully mix in a small amount of warm water. You need to make a spreadable paste, so don’t add too much water. Massage the paste gently into your skin for 2-3 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
Yoghurt & yeast scrub
Skin type:All Use: Once a week
4 teaspoons yoghurt 2 teaspoons almond meal 1 teaspoon brewer’s yeast 1 teaspoon runny honey
Mix all together in a bowl. Wash your skin, then massage the scrub gently into your face for 2-3 minutes. Either wash off with warm water, or leave on as a mask and wash off after 15-20 minutes.
Sugar body scrub
Skin type: All (do not apply on acne) Use: Once a week
½ cup sugar (any sugar in your pantry) Cold-pressed oil (e.g. olive, wheat germ, peanut, corn, sunflower).
Mix sugar and oil in a bowl until you have smooth texture. Have a shower, and either towel yourself dry, or stay wet. Massage the scrub gently into your body for 2-3 minutes, adding water if needed. Wash off with warm water, either in the shower or with a wet cloth.
Note: Massage carefully: let the scrub do the job.
This scrub is great for the body, but a little too harsh for the face.
Honey and oak face scrub
This is also good for the body - just increase the ingredients.
Skin type: All Use: Once a week
½ cup of oats ¼ cup of honey
Mix oats and honey together in a bowl. Wash your face and either dry it or leave wet. Massage the scrub gently into your face for 1-2 minutes. Wash off with warm water, or leave on as a mask and wash off after 15-20 minutes.
Masks
For each of these three masks, make a paste from the ingredients and smooth it onto your face (neck & décolleté will like it too).
1. Avocado& lemon juice (squeezed from lemon) – all skin types
2. Banana & cream (dairy product) – all skin types except oily or blemished
3. Honey & egg yolk - all skin types
Leave for 30 minutes, then wash off with lukewarm water.
Aloe vera juice pack
It’s worth growing an aloe vera plant in your garden or a pot - aloe vera has healing soothing, antibacterial and moisturising properties. It’s also a cooling & soothing agent.
To make the juice pack:
-
Take a leaf of aloe vera, peel off the outer layer and scrape out the flesh.
-
Mix the flesh in a blender.
-
Place mixture in the fridge and apply when it’s cold.
-
One leaf creates a lot of juice, so save it for future use.
