Back pain at work
When I ask ‘How do you avoid back pain at your desk?’ almost everyone says, ‘I do have back pain, but what can I do?’
I started having problems when working 14-hour days at my computer. I ignored it. After one week I woke up and couldn’t move my upper back at all. I was in so much pain I was crying. Often, pain is the result of tension building up in the body. This can often be linked to emotional stress and tension.
What can you do?
-
Listen to your body when something does not feel right.
-
Get up from your desk for short, regular breaks.
-
Do daily exercise, e.g. walking, swimming, gardening.
-
Change work tasks.
-
Make it a habit to do stretches and exercises.
-
Take time to relax and do something enjoyable.
-
Be aware of yourself - your thoughts, emotions and actions.
We have only one body. It serves us incredibly well - so take care of it.
What’s the pay-off for being stressed?
- Are you happier?
- Is your family pleased to see you stressed?
- Are you fun to be with?
No, No, No ... There are no benefits from being stressed, and besides, you’re likely to get sick! Be self-aware and understand what makes you anxious, and why. Recognize what helps you to release the tension - and then do it.
How to relieve stress:
-
Briefly walk away from the situation or do something else.
-
Breathe deeply - it calms your nervous system.
-
Write down all the things that make you stressed – this can also release tension.
-
Talk to someone. If we share our troubles, the burden is lighter.
-
Listen to your favorite music.
-
Ask someone to give you a hug (you feel so good after).
