Here are some ways to tighten up your skin – and improve your health.

Eat

  • Blueberries, broccoli and pomegranates and drink green tea (organic).

Don’t smoke

  • Cigarettes decreased the skin’s ability to fight off the free radicals, and the repetitive pursing of lips exacerbates wrinkles around the mouth

Stress less

  • High level of the stress hormone cortisol can lead to thinning of the skin. Keep cortisol levels in check with meditation, yoga or moderate exercise. Also get plenty of sleep and take a fish-oil supplement every day.

Cut down on sweets

  • When excess sugar binds to collagen and elastin fibres (a process called glycation), they become brittle and the skin sags. Cut out simple sugars such as white bread and fruit juice.

A homemade remedy for cystitis

If you’re prone to cystitis, drink homemade barley water. Mix half a cup of pearl barley with one litre of water and simmer for twenty minutes. Strain and add honey to taste

For smooth, sexy lips

Make your won lip balm by combining one tablespoon of melted beeswax with one tablespoon of olive or sweet almond oil. You may add a few drops of lavender or rose oil if you wish. Pour the mixture into a very small jar and apply to your lips two or three times a day

To strengthen weak hair

You can improve the texture of weak, thin hair by drinking two cups of rosemary and sage tea every day. Taken in this way, the brew will gradually strengthen your hair

A tea for nausea relief

A cup of peppermint tea with a pinch of fresh ort powdered ginger relaxes the gall bladder and calls the digestive enzymes. It brings relief from nausea

Be aware that what you eat today will affect how you feel tomorrow. Every time you choose to eat healthy or junk foods, you are affecting he levels of energy and vitality you will have in reserve for the next day

Give yourself a break and allow yourself one naughty treat a day. A cup of delicious Italian coffee (not too strong) or a small sweet is a fitting reward for being good most of the time

The Gift of Water

Water nourishes our blood and our cells, and prevents the build-up of toxic wastes in our bodies. We can’t survive without it. Make a conscious effort to drink water- around six to eight glasses. Record your habits for a week, as sometimes we can forget to drink at all!

The benefits of Sage tea

One or two cups of sage tea a day will help to heighten your spirits and may improve depression. As it assists in the balancing of oestrogen levels, it’s particularly useful for menopausal women

Few would disagree that taking a bath is a wonderful, relaxing experience, but what are the factors to making a good bath a great bath?

As far back as the days of Cleopatra when she demanded fresh milk for her daily bathing ritual, baths have been a firm favourite to cleanse, beautify and moisturize the skin.

Add to this the warmth of the water to aid relaxation and the myriad of preparations and products created specifically for bath time, and you have an amazing spa treatment that you can create in the comfort of your own home.

Creating a bathing experience

The essentials for creating a wonderful bathing experience begin long before the taps are turned on and the bath salts added:

Ensure that you find a small slice of time in your busy life that is free of children/husbands/Jehovah’s Witnesses knocking at the door. Switch off the phone, including the silent vibration on your mobile and lock the bathroom door, with strict instructions NOT to be disturbed any time soon.

Bath Time Essentials

  • Candles to create atmosphere. Aromatic or scented candles are great but ensure that they are a natural, clean scent and the candles do not burn with a black smoke as many cheap candles do. Look for beeswax or soy candles for a truly organic experience

 

  • Music is great if you don’t often get a chance to listen to your favourite tunes, though you may want to give the Metallica a miss at bath time. Selected stores carry spa mix CD’s which are used in spas and salons and contain a beautiful mix of relaxing and regenerating music

 

  • Wine/Tea/Coffee – There is nothing nicer than sipping on your favourite beverage as you lie back and listen to the sounds of spa. Take care if consuming alcohol, as the heat of the bath water will raise your body temperature and increase the effects of alcohol

 

  • Warm fluffy towels are a definite requirement when stepping out of a cooling bath, as is a comfortable, thick robe. If you live in a country that has a cold winter such as Europe or the US, it is more than likely you have central heating, so pop it on the radiator so it will be warm and inviting by the time you have finished your bath

Summer is here in the Southern world, whilst over in the Northern Hemisphere they are winding down for a cozy winter! – Take some time out to care for yourself and stock up on some great new goodies which will have you scrubbed, shined, soothed and set to shed those winter woolies this summer!

Brush up. If you’re feeling listless in the morning, try dry body brushing. It removes dead skin cells and gets the blood pumping, delivering oxygen around the body and leaving you feeling invigorated. If you’re strapped for time, use an exfoliating scrub or gloves in the shower.

Hand Overhaul. Our hands see more sun than the other parts of our bodies, so can therefore age quickly. Always apply a sunscreen on the back of your hands and moisturize regularly.

Feet First. The average person will walk about 16,000 kilometers in their lifetime, so it pays to look after your tootsies. To avoid developing corns and calluses, soak your feet in warm water, then rub away loose skin with a pumice, foot file or scrub. It’s a big decision to get your skin treated by a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist – for example, botox injections, collagen, hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Perlane), Newfill and other injectible fillers and treatments. 

But once you’ve decided, you can get even greater benefits by getting a fruit-peel treatment beforehand. This treatment with AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) stimulates and stabilizes the skin, making the injections or implants last longer.

Only dermatologists, surgeons or professionally trained beauticians should apply the treatment, and good communication is essential.

  • Plan for your AHA treatments at least four weeks before the fillers/implants
  • Your treatment will be with high-level AHAs
  • Continue each night with your own routine of lower level AHAs (5%)
  • Sun makes the skin ‘thicker’, and AHAs remove the top layer of skin.  If you use AHAs, your skin becomes sun-sensitive. You have to use sun protection at all times, to protect your skin from hyper-pigmentation (dark areas).

If you perspire a lot and suffer from armpit odour, here’s a tip.

Get any cosmetic clay base mask, and mix it with purified water. Apply it to your underams, and let it dry. Then wash off with lukewarm water. View the clay mask

 It may seem strange, but a clay mask will draw out any toxins, and it may help remove the smell.

Antiperspirant products stop us from sweating, but the toxins do not get flushed away. Some natural deodorants work, but some are useless. It’s a matter of trial and error.

Look on the product label for:

  • Bicarbonate of soda (it eliminates odours)
  • Certified organic aluminium-free deodorant see here
  • Avoid aluminium see here

If you stop using antiperspirant, you may find you perspire more and the odour is stronger. But once your body is detoxified, this will usually resolve.

Other things to consider:

  • Is your diet balanced and healthy?
  • Are your hormones stable?
  • Are you drinking enough? 
  • Do you exercise enough?

Consult with your naturopath or doctor, if you are concerned.

We usually put perfume directly onto the skin – after all, spraying onto our clothes could leave a stain.

But take note:

  • Perfume combined with sunshine can cause photo damage to the skin (hyper pigmentation, or brown marks)
  • Lemon oil can cause increased skin sensitivity to ultraviolet light if left on the skin

The answer is to put a drop of your perfume behind your ears. Why? Behind the ears there is stronger blood circulation, and the perfume will be more intense.
