Smells go directly into the emotional centre of the brain, bypassing rational interpretation and producing an instant emotional response. That’s why smelling the aftershave worn by your first boss might make you uncomfortable around your new date, or why the scent of the roses your grandmother grew can make you feel automatically cocooned in warmth.

It’s worth experimenting to find a few fragrances that can instantly lift your mood. These are often associated with positive memories from childhood – memories of being loved and cared for. For many people, it’s the smell of baking cakes. For others, it’s the scent of ripe mangoes, conjuring summer holidays, or the aroma of fresh coffee creating an expectation of enjoyment.

Use your knowledge to create mood lifters that help you feel content.

You can also train yourself to respond positively to a particular, easily-come-by scent.

For example, put some lavender essence in an oil burner and concentrate on creating a relaxed and positive mood. Soon the smell itself will create the mood, and you can use it to lift a cloud.

Does heat affect essential oils?

Any oil can go bad if not stored properly. Extreme heat is not good for the stability of oils, and direct sunlight for extended periods can also affect them adversely.

How to store essential oils

Sunlight, heat and oxygen are the main culprits in oxidising and degrading essential oils. Keep them tightly sealed, in amber glass bottles, in a dark, cool place where temperature changes are minimal. Ideally, you should store your oils upright, away from direct light, and protected from damp and humidity.

Scalp Massage Blends

The nutrients needed to build healthy hair reach the hair follicles through tiny blood vessels. When we are tense, head muscles contract, compressing these vessels and restricting the flow of blood.

Regular scalp massage is one of the most effective ways to release muscle tension, condition the scalp and stimulate healthy hair growth.

Try the following essential oil combinations for your hair:

Oily Hair – 20 drops bergamot, 10 drops cypress, 20 drops sage – rinse well following application

Damaged Hair – 10 drops geranium, 20 drops lavender, 20 drops sandalwood

Hair loss – 10 drops juniper, 20 drops cedarwood, 20drops rosemary

Dandruff – 20 drops eucalyptus, 10 drops cedarwood, 20 drops tea tree oil

For oily hair it is important to thoroughly shampoo the oil residue out of the hair after leaving on the scalp for a 10-20 minute period.

Bath Time Products

Bath time built stores like David Jones and Myer: It’s a known fact that almost every woman in the modern world will have received some kind of bath set in her lifetime.

Be it a combination of bath salts, cubes, bubble bath or talcum powder, bath sets are definitely the easy option for that long lost Aunty at Christmas and will seemingly never go out of fashion.

But if you are looking for something a bit more spa for your bath time, read on for some indulgent treats

Essential Oils

Essential oils are perfect for creating and enhancing bath time moods, with specific blends for calming, relaxing, uplifting and reviving.

Look for ingredients such as Lavender, Vanilla and Rose to create feelings of warmth, relaxation and calmness. Blends of bergamot, lemon and lime are perfect when you want to feel rejuvenated and awakened.

Essential oils are becoming more widely available, but care must be taken if oils are to be blended with each other, with a pre blend being more suitable unless you are a qualified aromatherapist. When it comes to the quality of the oil, the general rule is you get what you pay for:

If you purchase cheap, low quality oil it will not have much more effect than scenting the air. High quality oils should be used in bath water in moderation, with 2-3 drops being all that is needed to deliver the required results. Essential oils can also be burnt during bath time utilising an oil burner and beeswax or tallow candles.

Tamanu oil Anti- aging help us have great skin

If I discover a good product, I can’t wait to try it.

I was at the market and my friend (a naturopath) was talking about Tamanu oil – how great it was for the skin. He asked me if we have it in our range. I did not know, so I looked at the ingredients and yes! It is.

Of course I’ve now used this amazing essence, and my skin has improved a lot. Tamanu oil is claimed to improve the appearance of wounds, and of healthy skin. It is used widely in the Pacific Islands as a folk medicine.

I am using it mainly after exfoliating & a mask. My skin looks fantastic & other people say they love it too! When I am tired or have had a full day, I give my skin this “food”, to be rejuvenated for the next day.
