Lifestyle tips for taut skin

This information comes from InStyle magazine. (‘Lifestyle tips for taut skin’, by Alysia Poe and Naomi McGee)

Here are some ways to tighten up your skin – and improve your health.

Eat

  • Blueberries, broccoli and pomegranates and drink green tea (organic).

Don’t smoke

  • Cigarettes decreased the skin’s ability to fight off the free radicals, and the repetitive pursing of lips exacerbates wrinkles around the mouth

Stress less

  • High level of the stress hormone cortisol can lead to thinning of the skin. Keep cortisol levels in check with meditation, yoga or moderate exercise. Also get plenty of sleep and take a fish-oil supplement every day.

Cut down on sweets

  • When excess sugar binds to collagen and elastin fibres (a process called glycation), they become brittle and the skin sags. Cut out simple sugars such as white bread and fruit juice.

Anti-aging cream in your 20s

Anti-aging cream in your 20s

After Diana watched my video ‘Tamanu oil is anti-aging’ she asked, ‘Is it OK to use anti-aging creams at 20? I really don’t want wrinkles … What I thought is the earlier you start, the better it will be, since prevention is key.’

Diana is too young yet to need anti-aging creams. But prevention is the key. Excessive sun exposure is responsible for most of the skin damage associated with aging, so try to avoid sun exposure. Watch ‘Sun exposure and the skin’.

  • Have a regular skin routine – it’s the essential part of healthy skin: cleansing, exfoliating, mask, moisturiser and serum. Watch ‘DIY facial’.

See my e-book for beauty routines to improve your skin.

  • Eat antioxidants – they are vitamins or nutrients that help protect us from the effect of free radicals in our bodies, including damage to skin cells. They are found in fruit and vegetables: plants produce antioxidants to protect themselves from damage by free radicals. Read more ‘Antioxidants in our food’ or watch the video.

How you can prevent accelerated ageing

How you can prevent accelerated ageing

Beautiful skin health embodies the focused belief that a skin care regimen should treat the skin from both the inside and the outside:

You can prevent accelerated ageing by supporting and protecting the body from toxic and harmful ingredients such as tannins in wine preservatives in food products,  keeping destructive free radicals under control and providing the skin with all the nourishment it requires. This includes a small amount of fat to maintain skin elasticity and nutrition and enough hydration to prevent early aging of the skin.

Ohh great news we can eat fat  :-)

Fatty acids improve the skin by decreasing the occurrence of clogged pores, reducing the body’s production of inflammatory agents that can lead to skin damage, reducing skin dryness and related problems such as eczema, and improving the skin’s elasticity.

These fatty acids are responsible for healthy cell membranes. They prevent harmful substances from entering the cells, but allow essential nutrients in. Because these substances strengthen the cell membrane, they help to keep water in and keep the cells hydrated. This helps the skin maintain its proper moisture level resulting in skin that is plump and younger looking.

By combining organic skin care with a nutrient dense diet supplemented with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients which includes, we can replace nutrients, strengthen the cell membranes and restore health and beauty to the skin.

Treating wrinkles

Treating wrinkles

Some foods, herbs, oils and other ingredients are beneficial for a healthy complexion, and may improve the appearance of dry, wrinkled skin.

Ingredients to look for

  • Rosehip seed oil is used to reduce scarring and facial lines.
  • Avocado contains vitamins A, B1, B2, pantothenic acid and E, as well as lecithin. It’s excellent for dry and wrinkled skin. It has restructuring powers to keep skin moisturized and soft. It protects skin from drying and makes it more elastic
  • Rose essential oil is astringent, toning and regenerative.
  • Olive juice extract is a unique antioxidant. It protects both your skin and the polyunsaturated oils in products from free radical damage. It reduces skin damage caused by pollution and UV radiation, therefore protecting the skin from photo-aging. It also improves skin hydration and elasticity.
  • Shea butter helps to improve the elasticity of the skin, making it a valuable addition to products for all skin types. It has anti-microbial and moisturising properties and provides protection against the UV rays of the sun.

Can we avoid wrinkles?

Can we avoid wrinkles?

Truly I am not sure if there is anything that really prevents our skin from getting older. But we can do things to support our skin, instead of harming it.

The best step you can take is to protect your skin from UV rays. In the past, women used sun umbrellas to protect their skin. They knew the sun made them look older.

Elastin and collagen

Two important proteins in your skin are elastin and collagen. These help keep your skin looking smooth and plump. Sun exposure dries out the collagen and elastin, and the skin hardens up. Here’s what Wikipedia says:

Elastin is a protein in connective tissue that is elastic and allows many tissues in the body to resume their shape after stretching or contracting. Elastin helps skin to return to its original position when it is poked or pinched. Elastin is also an important load-bearing tissue in the bodies of mammals and used in places where mechanical energy is required to be stored.

Collagen is the main protein of connective tissue in animals and the most abundant protein in mammals, making up about 50% of the whole-body protein content. Tough bundles of collagen called collagen fibers are a major component of the extracellular matrix that supports most tissues and gives cells structure from the outside, but collagen is also found inside certain cells. Along with soft keratin, it is responsible for skin strength and elasticity, and its degradation leads to wrinkles that accompany aging. It is also used in cosmetic surgery and burns surgery.

Antioxidants

To understand how to keep your skin (and your body) healthy you also need to know about antioxidants. These are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Antioxidants are found in certain foods that neutralise free radicals. These include the nutrient antioxidants, vitamins A, C and E, and the minerals copper, zinc and selenium.

To summarise:

  • Avoid the sun, especially between 10 am and 3 pm
  • Always apply sun block (SPF at least 15), cover up and wear a hat
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat high-antioxidant foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain cereals.
  • Nurture skin daily with ingredients that support the skin’s needs. Look for elastin, collagen and antioxidants in beauty products.

Tamanu oil Anti- aging help us have great skin

If I discover a good product, I can’t wait to try it.

I was at the market and my friend (a naturopath) was talking about Tamanu oil – how great it was for the skin. He asked me if we have it in our range. I did not know, so I looked at the ingredients and yes! It is.

Of course I’ve now used this amazing essence, and my skin has improved a lot. Tamanu oil is claimed to improve the appearance of wounds, and of healthy skin. It is used widely in the Pacific Islands as a folk medicine.

I am using it mainly after exfoliating & a mask. My skin looks fantastic & other people say they love it too! When I am tired or have had a full day, I give my skin this “food”, to be rejuvenated for the next day.
