Exfoliating Brush

Exfoliating Brush

A key way to keeping skin healthy and glowing is the use of exfoliating products or skin brushes. An exfoliating or skin brush is perfect to use at bath time, particularly when the pores of the skin are dilated.

Skin brushing not only smoothes and softens dry or dehydrated skin, it also stimulates the blood supply and lymphatic circulation, adding to the detoxifying process.

Go to work on stubborn cellulite areas such as the tops of thighs with an exfoliating brush regularly, and changes will be noticed within a matter of months. If an exfoliation brush sounds a little too rough for your bath relaxation time, there are a number of exfoliating products such as salts and creams that can be used. Epsom salts are particularly effective for calming and soothing the skin and are a natural and cheap alternative. Epsom salts can be purchased from most pharmacists or chemists.

Look for products that contain micro beads or small exfoliating fragments as opposed to harsh ingredients that can scratch the skin. Products containing coffee, cocoa and seaweed extracts are particularly effective for speeding circulation and improving skin condition.

Milk and honey beauty recipe

Milk and honey beauty recipe

So beauty therapy is just playing with creams, right? Well, not exactly, but that’s part of it. Let’s go back in history…

Once, women bleached their hair by brushing it with bird poo. They coloured their lips red with a substance from a particular snail – eeuw.

Cleopatra’s exquisite skin complexion is legendary.  She bathed in raw milk and honey. Milk contains lactid acid, which gently exfoliates and cleanses. Honey contains minerals and vitamins to heal and nourish.

Try it, your skin goes as soft as a baby’s.

Milk and honey bath

1 cup of milk  (milk powder or raw milk)

1 cup of honey

Mix this in bowl and add it to your warm bath. Soak yourself for 20-30 minutes.

Milk and honey for dry skin

Mix well 2 soup spoons of honey and 1 cup of milk (raw if possible). Apply morning and night with a cotton pad. The mixture last a couple of days in the fridge.

Treating wrinkles

Treating wrinkles

Some foods, herbs, oils and other ingredients are beneficial for a healthy complexion, and may improve the appearance of dry, wrinkled skin.

Ingredients to look for

  • Rosehip seed oil is used to reduce scarring and facial lines.
  • Avocado contains vitamins A, B1, B2, pantothenic acid and E, as well as lecithin. It’s excellent for dry and wrinkled skin. It has restructuring powers to keep skin moisturized and soft. It protects skin from drying and makes it more elastic
  • Rose essential oil is astringent, toning and regenerative.
  • Olive juice extract is a unique antioxidant. It protects both your skin and the polyunsaturated oils in products from free radical damage. It reduces skin damage caused by pollution and UV radiation, therefore protecting the skin from photo-aging. It also improves skin hydration and elasticity.
  • Shea butter helps to improve the elasticity of the skin, making it a valuable addition to products for all skin types. It has anti-microbial and moisturising properties and provides protection against the UV rays of the sun.

What’s a rejuvenating mask?

Family Health Beauty Info header

What ’s a rejuvenating mask?

There so many types of mask – here’s one explained.

A rejuvenating mask is designed to nourish, revitalize, renew, repair and restore the skin. It’s beneficial for dry or mature skin. Use the mask once or twice a week (try to exfoliate/ scrub before to get the most benefit).

What are the ingredients?

A good organic mask may contain some or all of these natural ingredients:

  • White clay – promoting a smooth, clear texture
  • Organic horsetail and nettle to help renew the skin’s surface
  • Gotu kola herb, which like ginseng is said to be an elixir of life. Useful for stressed skin, to heal wounds. A good tonic for the skin.
  • Stinging nettle leaf, which aids micro-circulation of the skin. Can be used to treat dark circles around the eyes.
  • Lavender, which regulates sebum production. (For more about sebum, see my article ‘Six solutions for skin trouble.’) Lavender also promotes new skin cells and soothes red, inflamed skin.

Tamanu oil Anti- aging help us have great skin

If I discover a good product, I can’t wait to try it.

I was at the market and my friend (a naturopath) was talking about Tamanu oil – how great it was for the skin. He asked me if we have it in our range. I did not know, so I looked at the ingredients and yes! It is.

Of course I’ve now used this amazing essence, and my skin has improved a lot. Tamanu oil is claimed to improve the appearance of wounds, and of healthy skin. It is used widely in the Pacific Islands as a folk medicine.

I am using it mainly after exfoliating & a mask. My skin looks fantastic & other people say they love it too! When I am tired or have had a full day, I give my skin this “food”, to be rejuvenated for the next day.

Dry skin

Dry skin

Does the weather dry out our skin?

AND

Do we have to protect and feed our skin in all conditions?

The answer is YES.

“Please feed me nicely from inside and out!” Your skin is asking for extra protection and hydration. It will soak up every nourishing treatment you give it.

We all may say “I have no time” BUT you wash your face anyway so applying a face mask afterwards it takes only 1 minute.

Of course, we have the illusion that we must relax with a face mask. Well, that’s a bonus. If you haven’t time to lie down for 20-30 minutes, just apply the mask and keep doing your chores, then rinse it off.

I do it very often sitting on my desk working and looking quite funny with a green mask.

You only need to do this once or twice a week. You will see your skin will improve.

Also Remember: drink 2 litres of water daily! That’s where most problems with dry skin start. Not enough hydration from the INSIDE.

Yes: beauty inside out :-)
