Beauticians and hygiene
Beauticians and hygiene
When I was 14 I went to a beauty therapist, and I’ll never forget it. She had been smoking, so I smelt her breath while she was cleaning my face. The hair band she put on me was stained with make-up from another client. She didn’t wash her hands before starting, and her long nails damaged my skin. It took me four weeks to heal it, washing with chamomile and aloe vera.
I hope you don’t have such an encounter. Always say something and clarify the problem if you don’t feel comfortable with a beauty therapist. The good thing is, we learn from these experiences, and they help us recognize the good practitioners.
There are plenty of wonderful beauticians. You can talk to them, and trust their knowledge and experience.
Cleanliness check:
- The client’s chair must have clean sheets
- All towels must be hot washed (90° C)
- Hair bands must also be hot washed
- Therapists must disinfect their hands – these should not smell of cigarettes or food
- All equipment must be sterilized
- Mask and make-up brushes must be sterilized
- When cleaning skin with blemishes (removing spots), therapist can use surgical gloves and/or paper tissues
- Some therapists use a mouth cover because they are so close to the client’s face.
