Don’t you think that it makes complete sense that organic skin care and anti-aging products can do very little for someone unless the whole person is making a shift towards a healthier, non-toxic lifestyle?

Recognizing the importance on skin of following a cleansing and anti-inflammatory diet will not only allow the skin to age slowly and gracefully but also provide a smooth, soft and glowing complexion.

An anti inflammatory diet is rich in foods that are gentle on the stomach and easily digested such as raw vegetables, cleansing soups. These can include homemade vegetable soups with ingredients such as carrot, parsley, celery, asparagus and ginger which have detoxifying and cleansing properties (I never tried ginger in soup and you?). Unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice, bread and pasta are also easily digested and provide consistent energy levels throughout the day.

Free radical offenders such as smoking, hormonal imbalance and a poor diet combined with damage caused by factors such as food sensitivities, additives and prescription drugs overload our immune system and fuel inflammation.

Bubbly Feet treat with lovely lemon and a kick of fresh Vitamin C will keep you energies all day long . Vitamin C helps the body fight the effects of stress by replacing lost nutrients and increasing energy levels.

Heavenly when soaking rough tired feet, ten times better when massaged by someone else afterwards! So put your feet up and relax you deserve it.

Ingredients

  • 2 drops essential oil of your choice, or try lemon and black pepper. Lemon oil is famed for its cleansing and calming properties whilst black pepper has a natural heating and detoxifying effect
  • ½ cup (about 100g) sodium bicarbonate. This is a natural calming agent and will also make your foot bath preparation fizz.
  • 3 teaspoons citric acid (Berocca with Vitamin C will do). This is excellent for softening the water and gently cleansing the feet.

Directions

Dissolve all of the ingredients together in a bowl big enough to use as a foot bath and soak. Exfoliate afterwards using your favourite exfoliant or foot file.

One day at the market I saw Mark with his daughter Holly, aged 5. Her face was glowing red, and I asked him if they used sun cream. He said, ‘Yes, I put it on her just before we left.’

He is my client and I should be polite, but I tapped on his forehead and said, ‘Far toooo late – she’s already burnt.’ Since that day, when I meet him he points at Holly and says, ‘See, I put it on 30 minutes before.’

Get your sun cream now, while you read this. Why? Check the label. All sun screen products say, ‘Apply 20-30 minutes before sun exposure.’ Yet it’s obvious many people are either unaware of this, or ignore it.

Why apply it 20-30 minutes before sun exposure?

  • Sun cream needs this time to be absorbed and protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays.
  • If you’re already in the sun, you won’t be protected for up to 30 minutes – long enough for sun damage. 

 Now you know. No excuses.

Prepare your skin for injectible fillers

It’s a big decision to get your skin treated by a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist – for example, botox injections, collagen, hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Perlane), Newfill and other injectible fillers and treatments. 

But once you’ve decided, you can get even greater benefits by getting a fruit-peel treatment beforehand. This treatment with AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) stimulates and stabilizes the skin, making the injections or implants last longer.

Only dermatologists, surgeons or professionally trained beauticians should apply the treatment, and good communication is essential.

  • Plan for your AHA treatments at least four weeks before the fillers/implants
  • Your treatment will be with high-level AHAs
  • Continue each night with your own routine of lower level AHAs (5%)
  • Sun makes the skin ‘thicker’, and AHAs remove the top layer of skin.  If you use AHAs, your skin becomes sun-sensitive. You have to use sun protection at all times, to protect your skin from hyper-pigmentation (dark areas).

Does hair growth increase when we shave?

No! You don’t create more hairs by shaving. But:

  • the hair grows faster
  • the hair structure changes – usually becoming stronger. A man’s beard can become coarser from shaving every day.
  • shaving does stimulate the hair to grow
  • shaving cannot create new hair follicles view the picture here

If you stop shaving, you may notice that the growth slows down, and the hairs are finer.

If you perspire a lot and suffer from armpit odour, here’s a tip.

Get any cosmetic clay base mask, and mix it with purified water. Apply it to your underams, and let it dry. Then wash off with lukewarm water. View the clay mask

 It may seem strange, but a clay mask will draw out any toxins, and it may help remove the smell.

Antiperspirant products stop us from sweating, but the toxins do not get flushed away. Some natural deodorants work, but some are useless. It’s a matter of trial and error.

Look on the product label for:

  • Bicarbonate of soda (it eliminates odours)
  • Certified organic aluminium-free deodorant see here
  • Avoid aluminium see here

If you stop using antiperspirant, you may find you perspire more and the odour is stronger. But once your body is detoxified, this will usually resolve.

Other things to consider:

  • Is your diet balanced and healthy?
  • Are your hormones stable?
  • Are you drinking enough? 
  • Do you exercise enough?

Consult with your naturopath or doctor, if you are concerned.

We usually put perfume directly onto the skin – after all, spraying onto our clothes could leave a stain.

But take note:

  • Perfume combined with sunshine can cause photo damage to the skin (hyper pigmentation, or brown marks)
  • Lemon oil can cause increased skin sensitivity to ultraviolet light if left on the skin

The answer is to put a drop of your perfume behind your ears. Why? Behind the ears there is stronger blood circulation, and the perfume will be more intense.

I had a client who came for electrolysis (hair removal) on her face.  She had a whole jewelry shop on her body, and didn’t want to take it off.

If you have any electric treatment, you can’t wear anything metal. You need to tell the practitioner if you have a pacemaker or sometimes even metal fillings (these days most dentists use ceramic).

Electronic or electric equipment can cause serious problems, including damage to a pacemaker.

Now I know a bit about physics (I passed my exams for a reason :-) ). Here’s what can happen, for example with metal fillings and electric/electronic equipment:

  • Your mouth is wet
  • The metal filling in your tooth is wet
  • Metal is highly conductive and attracts electricity
  • Electricity looks for the easiest way to travel and connects with the metal, to make a circuit
  • The metal filling lets the electric current through. In theory, it could burn you, or cause sparks.

But don’t worry, the equipment will indicate if something is wrong. A good beautician will take care of you.

When I was 14 I went to a beauty therapist, and I’ll never forget it. She had been smoking, so I smelt her breath while she was cleaning my face.  The hair band she put on me was stained with make-up from another client. She didn’t wash her hands before starting, and her long nails damaged my skin. It took me four weeks to heal it, washing with chamomile and aloe vera.

I hope you don’t have such an encounter. Always say something and clarify the problem if you don’t feel comfortable with a beauty therapist. The good thing is, we learn from these experiences, and they help us recognize the good practitioners.

There are plenty of wonderful beauticians. You can talk to them, and trust their knowledge and experience.

Cleanliness check:

  • The client’s chair must have clean sheets
  • All towels must be hot washed (90° C)
  • Hair bands must also be hot washed
  • Therapists must disinfect their hands – these should not smell of cigarettes or food
  • All equipment must be sterilized
  • Mask and make-up brushes must be sterilized
  • When cleaning skin with blemishes (removing spots), therapist can use surgical gloves and/or paper tissues
  • Some therapists use a mouth cover because they are so close to the client’s face.
