Why do we use beauty products?

How do you feel when you in stand in the middle of a beauty/ cosmetics shop?

Shelves of perfume, and so many cosmetics brands telling us about their ‘best’ product. As you walk through, the sales people try to get your attention, and spray you with perfume or suggest putting more make-up on you … even when you already have make-up.

Do we really need more products in the bathroom? Do we really need to put on more layers, to look and feel good?

I was recently in a big department store, where the bottom floor is for beauty. Why? Because beauty is a multi-billion dollar industry, and women LOVE beauty, right? But do we really know why we are using all these products?

I was looking for a facial serum because my friend had asked me ‘why should I use this serum and not the other one’. The salesperson was very attractive – at least, she was perfectly made up.

I looked at myself in mirror – no make-up, a couple of blemishes, light wrinkles, quite fair skin … I thought how great I would look if I painted myself as well as her. Get this right: I am a natural health and organics girl. No make up at all (sometimes mascara & blush & lip cream). Just using fresh, nourishing beauty products I really feel great.

The woman explained why the serum would be beneficial for my friend. But she didn’t tell me the main ingredients, which supposedly make the skin smooth & free of wrinkles within 48 hours. Ladies: there is no cream that can do this. You would need to go to a dermatologist for CO2 laser treatment or a TCA peel. Or a plastic surgeon.

I got no answer about the main ingredients. She was saying how wonderful the cream is & how well it works. Do you believe it?

I did some research on this serum. It seems this ingredient is a secret and no one can find out what it is. Hmm, what do you think? How can we make an informed choice when we don’t know the ingredients, or what they do?

Yes, we have our tricks & secrets when we’re cooking, to create a yummy sauce. We know that salt makes food salty, and chilli makes it hot. But for our skin, should we use products containing vitamin A, paraben, petroleum and other ingredients if we don’t know what they do?
